Program donated by Jesse Bendahan - Class of '71 The beginnings of THE CASTLE were a lot more confusing than you can imagine. Whether you were outside of Carnegie Hall, the Waldorf Astoria or Lincoln Center, the time after graduation for all Music & Art students was a bittersweet happy time. Those that attended Music and Art between 1936 and 1973, will remember the Lewisohn Stadium. Whether you were walking towards the school from Amsterdam Avenue or gazing westward out of the towers, the expansive Stadium was difficult to miss. Music and Art High School in the center top of photograph. Music and Art High School is in the center just to the right. In 1915, construction was completed of the Lewisohn Stadium. It was built between Amsterdam and Convent Avenue, from 136th Street to 138th Street. The Stadium was an amphitheater that served as a public space for athletic, musical, and theatrical performances. It was demolished in 1973 in order to expand the academic facilities on campus (North Academic Center). Map of the area. M&A (P.S. 193) is lower center, Lewisohn Stadium is center left. During the regular zoom meeting of our Class of '71, I presented this tribute to us and the three (or four) years that we spent at the Castle. M&A Forever.
In the 1980 film FAME there was an individual that I have not been able to place. Is she a Music and Art or a Performing Arts student? Is she an actress hired for the movie? I need your help.
She appears on the poster advertisement for the movie, the Hot Lunch sequence and she sang in the graduation celebration scene.

Do you know who this individual is?
Some of our amazing alumni who were in FAME got together for a virtual reunion. Catch more of them on February 11, 2021 during the benefit for LaGuardia. |
